University City

University City is a great place for people to live, work, play, and raise a family. University City occupies a triangle bounded by highway 52, the I-805, and the I-5. It is often referred to as the “Golden Triangle” because of its access to businesses, learning institutions, and other economic engines. The various canyons and parks through the city offer great access to nature and outdoor recreation. It is in close proximity to the University of California, San Diego, and the public school system is highly rated.

Communities

University City has housing units of various ages. Some homes were constructed in the pre-war era, and the age of homes ranges all the way to recent construction. Single family homes dominate here, but there are also high rise and other multi unit buildings. About two thirds of residences are occupied by owners. Some neighborhoods in University City are home to some of the wealthiest consumers in the nation. The zip code in University City is 92122.

People

Many residents in University City are married couples with or without children, and about a quarter are singles. Residents are well educated, with most having a bachelor’s degree or higher. Many homes have more than one car as most have to commute to work. People here usually work in white collar jobs in legal, technical, and managerial positions. People in University City are financially stable and environmentally conscious, and as consumers, make purchases that coincide with their beliefs.

Environment

University City has many areas with medium pollution scores and some low income areas as calculated by CalEnviroScreen. The pollution scores could indicate a population vulnerable to pollution related issues. High rates of dust and pollution particles may increase the spread of viruses, worsening the COVID-19 crisis in communities with already low defenses. Additionally, some parts of the area may lie in high fire threat districts. These environmental qualities could qualify some residents for rebates and incentives for Solar Power, Plug-In Vehicles (and EV Charging), or Energy Storage installations, lowering the cost of these installations.

Climate Equity Index

Climate Equity Index refers to the opportunity communities have to combat environmental justice and social equity concerns. Climate Equity is high to very high throughout University City, and residents may benefit from incentive opportunities to alleviate the cost of green technologies while striving for environmental justice.
