El Cajon

El Cajon (“the box” in Spanish) acquired it’s name because of it’s location in a valley surrounded by mountains. It covers about 14.5 square miles and has a population of about 100,000. The city boasts a diverse community with many parks, libraries, recreational centers, and other public facilities for its residents. It’s location and amenities make it an attractive business location for both well known and start up companies. There are several car dealerships, a vibrant downtown, and many plazas full of stores and entertainment facilities.

Communities

El Cajon has a diverse housing market, consisting mostly of homeowners in suburban areas and mobile renters in multi unit buildings. There are many suburban areas with single family homes that are occupied by older couples, either empty nesters or living with adult children. Many of these single family homes were built before 1970 and could require renovations. Installing solar could qualify you for tax credits on your remodeling projects.  The various multi unit structures are mostly single person units or home to single parent families. About 75% of occupants are renters, and most of the units were built before 1990. The zip codes that encompass El Cajon are 92019, 92020, 92021, 92022, and 92119.

People

There is great diversity among El Cajon residents, similar toEl Cajon homes, especially in the non-suburban areas. Suburban areas are predominantly white, while multi unit structures house mostly Hispanic, African American, or other foreign born ethnicities. However, all residents are hardworking and conscious of their appearance. Suburban homeowners are well educated and have created an affluent lifestyle for themselves. Renters in multi unit buildings may lack a more formal education, but their strong work ethic leads to advancements in their profession. All residents are willing to spend money and are well connected through the internet. People in El Cajon enjoy shopping, watching sports, and listening to music.

Environment

El Cajon has many areas with high pollution scores and low incomes as calculated by CalEnviroScreen, representing a population vulnerable to pollution related issues.  High rates of dust and pollution particles in disadvantaged communities may increase the spread of viruses, worsening the COVID-19 crisis in communities with already low defenses. Additionally, many parts of the area lie in high fire threat districts. These environmental qualities could qualify some residents for rebates and incentives for Solar Power, Plug-In Vehicles (and EV Charging), or Energy Storage installations, lowering the cost of these installations.
